Jewelry Store Robbers Caught on Tape
Los Angeles: Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) North Hollywood Area Detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying three armed bandits who stole $200,000.00 worth of jewelry. On March 25, 2010, at around 11:45 a.m., two male black suspects entered a jewelry store located in the 12600 block of Ventura Boulevard posing as customers. The suspects engaged in conversation with the victim for several minutes then produced handguns and ordered the victim to the floor. The suspects then restrained the victim using zip ties and continued with the robbery. Shortly after subduing the victim, the suspects opened another door to the location and allowed a third suspect to enter the jewelry store. The three suspects then ransacked the store, took jewelry from the display counters and safe within the jewelry store. The suspects drove off in a dark grey vehicle in an unknown direction.

The two men barged into Studio Jewelry in Greenpoint Monday afternoon and one pulled a handgun from his waistband, the video shows. The second man then jumped over the glass display case while the gunman stood watch by the door. As the second suspect chased Richard Sanocki, 54, into the back of the store, the gunman also jumped over the counter and started removing jewelry from the display case, the video showed. Sanocki was off camera when he was shot once in the chest, cops said. The robbers then ran out of the store. They remain at large. David Sanocki said it appeared the thieves knew ��what they were going after.��

80-year-old jewel thief cased Neiman Marcus jewelry counter while awaiting trial, officials say
An 80-year-old woman who authorities said spent decades as a international jewel thief faces more than five years in state prison after she was convicted of stealing an $8,900 diamond ring from a San Diego mall. And a surveillance tape of her examining a department store jewelry counter may have prevented her from being released on bail while she awaits sentencing. Doris Payne was convicted Wednesday of grand theft and burglary by a San Diego County jury in connection with the Jan. 2 theft of the ring from a Macy’s department store. She later told detectives she sold the ring for $1,800, officials said. Defense attorney Gretchen Von Helms unsuccessfully argued for the release of her client on bond pending sentencing after Deputy Dist. Atty. John Pro presented evidence that while awaiting trial in the San Diego case, Payne was captured on surveillance video at a Scottsdale, Ariz., Neiman Marcus store examining the jewelry counter.

DIY Thursday: Sew a Custom Jewelry Display
“Recycle, re-use” and “love the earth” were favorite catch phrases of my childhood of the late ’60′s early 70′s. I was given a sewing needle when I was 5 years old and taught how to make basic stitches. So the other day when I was searching the internet for mannequin style jewelry displays, it hit me. Why don’t I take the concept of one of my collections, hands, and make my own hands for display? A quick peek at just one of my hand groupings. They’re scattered all over my studio and house. After some searching, I realized I wouldn’t be able to purchase a sewing pattern for a hand. I had to jump right in and make one myself. I don’t have any training in pattern making but I had to try. I used regular white printer paper and drew an outline of my own hand. I didn’t measure it while I was drawing but I tried to draw the outline 1/4 inch bigger to allow for seams. The finished pattern on my kitchen table.
